Solar Panel Bird Proofing

Pigeons and other birds nest under solar panels because the gap between panel and roof tile is warm, sheltered, and hidden from predators. Once they move in, the problems stack up quickly — nesting material blocks the ventilation gap beneath panels, raising module temperatures and reducing energy output by up to 10-15%. Droppings are acidic and corrode frames and glass over time, while debris clogs gutters and downpipes. In the worst cases, birds peck at DC cabling, creating genuine fire risk.

Professional bird proofing typically involves fitting galvanised or PVC-coated mesh around the perimeter of the array, secured with non-penetrating clips that don't void your panel warranty. A pre-work inspection checks for active nests (protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981) and the cavity is cleaned and treated before the mesh goes on. Most residential installations take half a day and cost between £300 and £1,000 depending on array size and roof access.
